My Old Friend
Winter is beautiful but when the snow clears
I look out of my window and all is grey –
As if the sky has had its colour taken away
Whilst G-d decides what to put in its place
Today is such a day – the sky full of tears
The wind cannot keep the clouds at bay
So gloomy is it that in my bed I may lay
Nothing can put a smile upon my face
Through the window I see my old friend
Standing tall behind the old brown fence
There upon the merest patch of grass
He whiles away his years keeping watch
His foliage was gone come autumn’s end
Against biting winds for him – no defence
I know that soon the time will come to pass
When buds will start to grow upon the branch
Then with sun once more high in the sky
He reaches out his old and blackened arms
Beseeching the life-green blood to flow
Around his body from the buds to his roots
That is the time in bed I will not lay
But visit and upon him lay my palms
Spring the life-bringer replaces snow
And fosters the birth of healthy shoots
