A lifelong enemy walks with me each day and chaperones every move
Calm's clock has stopped to the long moments driven by the parasite
Slave to the shroud that surrounds me, that caricatures my existence
And shapes me into this blasphemous monster I chose not to become
I am pieces of a broken mirror, shards that cut deep and tear my life to shreds
Outcast to a world blinded by fear, ignorance and preconceived ideas
Beneath the dark veneer there is still faint glimmering, daily dimmed
Bound by the chains of mental shortcut that cannot be supressed
Society claims me as one of its rebellious sons, that mocks conformity
Yet the brooding would be hero was never given even half a chance
Casked in an affliction, fettered by cruel master and forced to curse as penance
My interface is broken, each day loads that same nagging virus back into memory
I cannot be remedied, set right by the skill of a surgeon's knife
My disease lives inside the mind, gives focus to vile thoughts that echo to shocked silence
Amplified torrents of words you would not wish to hear tumble from my lips
You are the blessed, you can turn away, while I can never hide

I had a good friend during my Army years
who in spite of this debilitating syndrome, was otherwise able to serve his country alongside
me as a Military Police Officer! His bride also
was born with it and I thank you for bringing
this condition to the world in print. If people
would just look at all others as simply people,
without judging them due to their differences
what a wonderful world this place would truly
be. Blessings, Robert Edgar Burns (Rob) |

Hi :)
The amazing thing about these words is that they transport your readers from a blessed place of personal, comfy sanctuary to an otherworldly & outragous existance. At best, I think I would find myself lost in a maze of embarassment with no possible way out if I, indeed, suffered from this affliction. Worst case, I admit I would forever more not know if I wanted to hear my own voice again. Sadly, even the most empathetic of those among us are sometimes hard-pressed to withhold judgement or remain unshocked by life's idiosyncrasies & the tribulations of our fellowman. I feel your compassion in your verse. Understanding the pain & suffering of another being is the highest regard we can give. Truly, sharing this is a most lovely expression of your heart. Smiles. . . elle |

Hi,
It is difficult to accept that people who have
this affliction can still function properly.
How tragic for them that their illness should
dominate their persona.
Well written, my friend.

As much as we try, try, and try, I don't know if we can every put ourselves in someone else's shoes and look back out at the world. But, it's funny. To me, that's one of the things that gives life its' greatest significance.
Great stuff here.
