To the tree that overlooks the loch
I asked "Do you exist? I fear not.
The bark of your branches is speckled with times imperfections
And reflections of the weather you've weathered
And the birds that you've feathered
Why time itself is measured
Here in your lot
But the young sapling you were
I can not find
Nor the darling leaves
That are of the kind
That summer lays abundent on your limbs
To fragrance the mind
Of the travellers you shelter
Or the idle passer by
Such as I
Even as I stand and stare
I see there you shed another darkened ember
Shunned to the cold earth of a dying December
And so the question, if you remember
You dont exist as the sapling or seed of your youth
Thats the truth and its the truth that I need
Nor do you exist as the beauty of spring
Or as you were last season or even last week
Why, your not even the same tree as you were when I started to speak!
What is there of you that I can name
As the tree that over looks the loch
And so I ask "Do you exist or not?!"
"And who is asking?" came the reply
"It is me! It is myself! It is I!"
"Well if thats true and it is indeed you,
Then I exist as much as you do
If what your seeking is the truth
The hairs on your head
Are not the hairs of your youth
The skin on your face
Bares little trace
Of the scratches and scrapes
You bore whilst blind
And not only that, also this will you find-
Your not even thinking with yesterdays mind!
I tell you the truth
As its the truth that you seek
Your dont exist as the very same
As when I started to speak!
On hearing the truth of the wise old tree
Not another word was said
But silent were we
And just as the ever changing weather
We sat there not existing
Not existing
Together
