Way Back When

Once upon a time, a long time ago.
Nothing went as fast, even cars were slow.
Danger was a word we just heard on the news.
We walked to school alone ... dared it without shoes.
Lamplight saw us home bathed in yellow glow.
A dollar got us in, with popcorn and the show.
Astronauts went faster for they were in a race
Juggling with the cosmonauts to be the first in space.
America burned night oil, and oh how they did try.
Sputnick was the Russian craft that made it to the sky.
I laugh today when thinking back about the monies spent,
to make a pen write upside down; I wonder where it went.
The Russians didn't burn the oil late into the night.
They just got a pencil and knew that it would write.
We still had a five and dime, with a soda shop.
We didn't ask for soda, we asked then for a pop.
A soda was a special drink kind of like a float.
Then they had banana splits served in a little boat.
Girls wore dresses, guys wore pants ... No guessing way back when.
One look said just who was who. I liked it way back then.
