The Intruder
Hiding from him the intruder
Can’t you hear him come – I can
Darkness – the only light the moon
Ceiling fan stirring the heat
Why did he pick this street?
Now - - at the heart of the monsoon
A noise – he’s here under the fan
Struggle for breath – reach for inhaler
On into the room’s deepest murkiness
I now hold my breath arms up
Hugging myself – trying to stay still
Going through drawers knife in hand
Don’t make a sound hold back a sneeze
All at once it’s over and he’s gone
