The Masked Man stands
Stooped and bloody on the shore.
Behind him
His tower burns; he is enveloped
In its dying light.
In his hands, three pictures :
An overweight young man, so lost,
A woman, beauty gone to grey,
A girl-child; eyes like the tempest behind him.
I could have saved you
He thinks
I only needed
Time
More time
He lets the pictures fall
Miles stands stiffly at the altar.
His rented suit
Chafes his neck and
Bulges around his waist.
His chubby hands
Grip the lectern
Tight.
He wants to scream
You were never there
He wants to cry
Not one of you knows what he did to me
He wants to shout
Why am I not happy? Do any of you know
What he stole from me?
But instead
He runs a finger under
His too-tight collar
And reads the eulogy
He has prepared.
The faces in the church are
Blank
Blank
Tonight, he will open
His wrists and
Be blank too.
Gloria is naked in her bedroom.
She runs her hands
Down
Over her sagging breasts
And the stomach
Wrinkled and slumped.
Her fingers
Part the wiry hair
At the top of her thighs
And she feels
Nothing
Her mouth tastes
Burned;
Too many cigarettes
And the cheap vodka
From the hotel bar.
They will find his body tonight.
His face ruined
By the cut-glass decanter
That sits at the bottom of the Yarra
Still,
They will know him; a celebrity does not go
Un-noticed
Into the night.
They will come for her
Tonight.
Gloria
Gloria
Wife, lover, mother,
Murderer.
He will never make you feel anything ever again.
Stephanie’s is running for her life.
Her heart
Which she once thought
Unbreakable
Pounds in her chest like a
Hammer.
She wishes for
One last taste.
One grey crystal to crunch
Between her teeth.
She wishes
That she had never tasted
That crystal
Meth-Amphetamine.
The faceless men
Who she let
Spasm
On top of her
For the change in their pockets.
Blue lights
Flashing
Closer behind her now
And that heart;
Stephanie’s unbreakable heart
Explodes in her chest
And she
Smiles
The concrete is soft.
The Masked Man shudders.
Some trick of the
Tide
Keeps passing the
Pictures
Back and forth in front of him.
He chokes
It didn’t have to be
Like this.
You weren’t alone.
I watched, I planned, I cast
My spells,
But,
They drowned my books.
They burned my life.
I could have saved you
With time
More time
I am Prospero
And I have failed
For
The
Last
Time

Welcome to YPDC.
This is a well written, heavy duty write.
Great job.
