Slowly Dies the Night

Contributed by Daniel_L_Bamberg on Friday, 30th December 2011 @ 09:54:34 AM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

Slowly dies the night
and the dark’s deepest quiet haunts me
I am alone and nested, awaiting sleep
to drift in dreams of nocturnal memory
Then a discomfort provokes a thought
my skin, my flesh, my shell; feels empty

Panic clamps the heart
and an urgent dread makes me weary
I can't explain such a strange affliction
This fear dilutes a slumber’s passivity
New discomforts now enter the mind
as lucid black shadows form around me

Terror shakes the nerves
I lie still with my eyes closed completely
but wonder if the shadows have faded
and squint my lids, feeding morbid curiosity
Those shadows have now formed a face
a vision of horror which breaks my very sanity

Confusion drinks the fear
That of my own, this face hovering above me
into my own eyes, my own eyes peer deeply
dear Heaven, something like this just cannot be
so cold and expressionless with panic's intent
my face daringly haunting it's very identity

As I run to the mirror for sorting calm
the mocking reflection is an unfamiliar sight
Hesitant with fear slowly turning to the bed
to see my own familiar face twisted in fright
I watch life's glow fade slowly from my eyes
and slowly dies the night

Absolutely magnificent. The portrayal of ones own mortality at its very best. Exquisite use of language that paints a beautifully dark canvas. My friend this is truly a triumph and deserved of more comment. Alistair.

Exquisitely done!
This leaves one holding one's breath, entirely on
the edge of what must surely come next. . .
