The Winding Stairs Of Tomorrow
Climb the winding stairs of tomorrow
And leave your heartache far below.
The past is lost so let it go.
Come to the gypsy and let her show
You a future you want to know.
Each rung a frozen tableau of time;
Hand over hand one ascends
Pausing at every juncture, no rhyme
Or reason, no chance to make amends.
Climbing ever higher ever more painful.
Come gypsy, I dare you show me more
For I have to face my inner fears.
So I pause at each and every door
No matter that they offer tears
And battered, bruised I climb for more.
What strange form of masochism is this?
Yet taking stock I forge ever onward.
I want to feel a quick and fleeting kiss
So I speed my pace and hurry upward
To reach a better door, a hope, a prize.
Eventually I reach a perch atop my life
And stare aloft into the distant sky.
Up above I know that I will have a wife
Yet no stairs reach this spot, but why?
I sit and cry realising the unholy truth.
No matter the course or the choices I make. Why oh why
Will I persevere, get so high, so close but surely die.

Until we step out of the manufactured reality of others we are never free of narrow, numbered steps of stairs created almost mischievously missing a step here 'n' there to complicate our true personal reality. Keep the faith, Al, see if we can find an elevator! Our own elevator. Sensitive capture of the dilemma here. Kudos.

A superbly crafted poem that flows from verse to verse carrying the reader along the passage of time, experiencing your past pains while building to what they believe to be a happy climax only for the poem to twist and the stairs to fall away leaving only empathy for the author. truly excellent work. |
