Anonymous Alcoholic

Contributed by cheetham on Friday, 2nd May 2003 @ 11:35:00 AM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

The Darkness radiates in the streets
The silence echos through the streets
The rain whistles in the alleys
The wind drips and joins the puddles of mud.

Pathetic Fallacy plays its part
on this bitterly cold september night
The only thing known to this man
Is the soothing poison in which he seeks escape.

He stumbles through the alley
Stuggling to regain balance
following another trip he wont remember come morning
whenever his morning happens to be.

As he falters past countless houses
a woman he passes by
Through this strangers eye can be seen
a glimpse of pity for this broken shell of a man

After another battle against gravity
he once again falls in the cold static of the concrete
this time he does not stuggle to stand
but accepts defeat with lamentable graciousness.

He sits slouched against a wall
uttering unrepeatable curses at the law Newton shaped.
Despite this harsh reality the man
falls into a dark and haunted sleep.

When he awakes, daylight is beginning
to pierce the darknesss
the rain has long since ceased
along with the delusion of happyness.

He slowly stands up and brushes dirt
off his once white ashen shirt
He holds his head to null the pain
and once is again homeward bound

A long a lonely walk ensues
ridded with both material and emotional pain.
A wound on his leg is throbbing,
lord knows where he picked that up

He spent his money and He spent his health
and at the end of the night, for what?
Alcohol did not solve a single problem
but how to waste his life away.

thats my favourite verse but all the stanzas are very well expressed. you give a powerful insight into a common but often misunderstood problem. excellent write, welcome to ypdc, Kate x

Dear cheetham,
I assume you are writting about someone you know and want to understand. It is much like insanity, that reason we take the first drink. we know it will lead to more and and more we know once we start we connot stop, we have no human ability within ourselves to stop but that first drink is like an arguement with insanity. Our mind and body ia addicted and w/o the alcohol we do not feel normal but once we start we cannot stop either there is no middle ground for us. We must get sober or we will go insane or die. I am sorry but even I live the struggle every day, and I don't always win the battle. Fran
