When I Was

Contributed by dvtpdw on Sunday, 27th November 2011 @ 01:31:59 PM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time alone
I never looked ahead to having a family of my own
I never ventured into the world with dreams of family love
I never knew what to dream, never looked above

When I reached my teenhood, my life was a stranded beach
I never thought about the future, or what stars to reach
I never had anyone to show me the proper ways
I never knew what to look forward to in the ensuing days

When I reached the age of young adult, I met my life
I was found by the man I love who made me his wife
I fell in love, first with him, then with the children I bore
I worked side by side with him, my heart an open door

When I reached the age of adult, I cared for my family so strong
I did everything I thought was right, not thinking I did wrong
My life revolved around their world, my only thought for their needs
I taught them love, kept them safe, hoped they would succeed

Now I've reached the age of old, I see that I have lost
They took all that I taught to them, gave it a hefty toss
I didn't make myself clear, didn't show the way to be
They threw away the loves they created, and headed out to sea

Dear God, can you help me understand, can you explain
How my children can turn away as they cause such pain
And go along their merry way without a backward glance
To how they leave their children without much of a chance

So follow your lonely course, my son and daughter I bore
From all I can see, the battle is over with this sad war
You win nothing, your loss beyond the mind's grasp
I can finally confine your horrible deeds to the past

Here's the funny part that seems to make me chuckle
I will never ever stop, you can not make me buckle
If it takes until the end of my very life and soul
I will make sure your children grow up loved and whole

Sad, but not without hope! The prayers of
a righteous man (or woman) availeth Much!
The Bible And He hears every prayer we
send up for our children and often cries
along with us! Know that your prayers are
never in vain, and when you least expect it,
they will be answered! Be the best grandmother
you can be with those grand children and stop
the cycle of heartache in it's tracks!
Blessings,
Robert Edgar Burns (Rob)
