Morning victoria radio forcast for today
The barometer predicts a scorcher for today
So all prepare the bush to be on fire
Tensions rise, as the barometer gets higher and higher
Today is a day of total fire ban
Stand-by to pump water from the dam
Kids get an early knock-off from school
Around to a mates house for a swim in the pool
Sunscreen plus over 40 degrees
Beer on ice and smoke through the trees
Fire engines race to block off roads
Evacuating fauna, Kangaroo`s, Cockatoo`s and Toads
Stockman despirate to control their cattle
They gallop their horses without a saddle
Whips crack and chainsaw`s roaring
Diesel pumping, Timber falling
Hoses lying across in droves
Beat around the bush, Sweat dry as a bone
24 hours felt like days
As ash wednesday fire burnt away
A victoria cross for every man
On this day,
Of total fire ban.

A fiercely descriptive poem. I live in New York City. Such fire-weather is foreign to this area. It really gave me an indelible picture of the rough terrain of Australia. I had no idea 'tis like that. What's to say? The earth, in the end, rules. Sometimes we are able to cope. Good poem. Scary. Sharp. Dry. --FH
