the alley lined in soot and snow
in heavens present past i know
to wander to hell and to future go
bleak seems the man in rags
cawing from a nearing crow
seems to sooth my doubts although
i look up to see the dirt below
smiles as sky sags
through roads lost in ash and clay
i wandered down some distant day
whom i was with or where i cannot say
but hushed my name seems like an epitaph
