a fool am i to think that joy
would knock upon my door!
just another upper-cut
that drops me to the floor!
i don't think i can get up this time;
each blow worse than the last!
the aches and pains have worn me down;
the light is fading fast!
i never was a quitter,
though I've left enough undone.
my defeats out way the glory
of the battles i have won.
i haven't strength to carry on;
the well of care's run dry.
my heart has slowly turned to stone;
gone the will to touch the sky.
the stars are dimmer now-a-days;
the moon a distant glow.
steady silence burns my ears;
my tears an endless flow.
love is plain in all my dreams;
but dreams last but a night.
the love i need to sustain life
is hidden in day's light.
i hear an eight count overhead;
two more and i am done!
winter rushes all around;
gone the season of the sun.

'The Boxer' in a strong poem. Without being over-obvious, it makes its metaphor. The language is beautiful; the meter much appreciated. This is a meaningful poem that grabs your interest and holds it down. Bravo! --FlintHunter
