Letting Go

two young lovers lie,
their bodies on fire,
with untamed passion
and burning desire.
she whispers, "my first.
please, take it slow",
to the boy holding onto
the girl letting go.
two years later they stood,
hand-in-hand at the altar
to tell all the world
their love would not falter.
her vows given him,
his to her evermore . . .
the man holding onto
the woman letting go.
seventeen years would pass
before they would part.
one left in the ashes
grievous pain in his heart.
"what must I do, your love to regain,
I don't know",
said the man holding onto
the woman letting go.
years later another stood
at the altar to wed,
and thoughts of the past
rushed 'round his head.
for twenty-plus years
he'd watched this child grow . . .
now, again was a boy holding onto
a girl letting go.
forty years on
in a room made for one
he held her hand
as in the past he had done.
last minute memories
of the words 'take it slow',
died the old man holding onto
the woman letting go.
