Approximately 7 months after my last dealings with the Dukes Of Hazard style Hillbilly family from Hell, and about 2 months after I had heard of Ameliaʼs beaten and battered body having been discovered in the woods near Brooksville I was on routine patrol in northern Pasco County. I received a radio call dispatching me to a Fight In Progress call on Shady Hills Road at the Majik Market Convenience Store parking lot just south of Spring Hill, Florida. It was a gloomy, wet, overcast day.
Upon arrival at the establishment I observed a large crowd of people standing in a tight circle around I knew not what. I exited my cruiser and walked up to two Paramedics who were sitting on the bumper at the rear of an ambulance with the doors open and a gurney bed sitting empty beside them. The Paramedics explained that they had arrived and discovered a man flailing his arms around wildly and walking toward the roadway as if to leave the establishment on foot with the top half of a shattered Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat firmly entrenched in his skull. His shirt, face and back were soaked with blood. The man fought off the Paramedics and refused treatment and was trying to walk away from him. The crowd circled around him and stopped him from leaving the vicinity. The Paramedics said he would die for sure without treatment and were surprised he was still alive at that. They requested he be “Baker Acted” by me because force would be necessary and he had already fought them off violently.
Using brute force I subdued the subject as the Paramedics tied him with cloth restraints to the gurney and transported him to a nearby little league baseball field to await a helicopter dispatched there to take the subject to Tampa General Hospitalʼs Trauma Unit. By then the subject had become unconscious and another zone Deputy had arrived to stay with the subject while I attempted to interview the witnesses gathered at the scene and find out details of the event and to get a description of the suspect who had departed the scene. The 30 plus people I interviewed all had a different story on all of my questions. They basically all agreed they had developed amnesia. I went into the store and found out from the clerk that he had observed nothing either and low and behold today was the first day he had ever forgotten to load a fresh tape into his video surveillance cameras. Other than the blood and shattered pieces of bat there was no evidence to gather at the scene and the only fingerprints on the bat belonged to the victim. Later that day I discovered that the victim was none other than our friendly
baby killing husband of Amelia and probably the one who killed her as well. I had not recognized him because his face and head were so disfigured when I approached him.
We never found out who had dispatched him that day and quite honestly I feel like he probably would be treated like a hero by the people that lived in that neck of the woods. It was Old Country Justice rearing itʼs head. Whenever something good happened in the Patrol Division to one of our members and we heard about it on our radios, we would all click our radios on and off for a few seconds as if to cheer only to hear a Supervisor get on the radio and order us to “Knock it off!” That day, when my dispatcher radioed me that my subject had been declared DOA on his arrival to Tampa General, the clicking radios lasted for at least two full minutes. That day there was no obligatory message from our supervisor. I remember, I started to whistle a happy tune all the way back to my patrol room. And I noticed the rain had stopped and the sun was shining so very brightly. The Bible says, “Be sure your sins WILL find you out,” and “Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord!”
From that day on, whenever I showed up to Roll Call/Read-off in the Patrol Division, all my fellow Deputies started howling and barking like dogs when I entered the room and referred to me as “Lawdog” because I, according to them, always got my man!
