The Affair
I’m embroiled upon a love affair
So read dear reader but take care
That if upon a love so dear
To which your love can not adhere
Be ready, senses full aware.
We met upon a stormy night
She a vision, Goddess, beauteous sight
I knew that in my mind so clear
And throwing out all thoughts of fear
A love affair was just and right.
She’d married young and thought was blessed
To a wealthy man who was not the best
Who treated her like serf or slave
One who was not strong or brave
Trapped by love she could not arrest.
All I wanted from the start
Was open-minded pure of heart
Intensity of the purest love
As if it came from God above
From which we could never ever part.
All went well and love grew stronger
No thought of stopping ever longer
We planned our trysts of blinding light
That shone, lit up surrounding night
We expected love to last forever.
But now, exposed, our love lies lost
So all we do is count the cost
To be for ever just a friend
My life I wish that it could end
Her name upon my stone embossed.
