A New Start

A New Start

What does one do when returned life?
Unsure. Nervous. Anxiety gripping my spine.
But also unbelievable joy.
So long in the shadows of depression and lethargy.
Stagnation.
Now like a deer caught in the headlights at night
Or the fledgling teetering on the edge of the nest
I venture forth. Unsteady but resolved.

Gone is the melancholy, the loathsome self-hatred.
The maelstrom of dark clouds blown away and replaced by light.
Blinding. Cleansing.
My heart beats so powerfully – pounding in my ears, deafening.
No need for drugs or alcohol. Life: the natural opiate.
A second chance to make amends. Not to be wasted.
Like a naked child waiting to be clothed and fed;
I wait for a sense of direction.

Hesitation but then, with time, assuredness.
My fate, desire, the chance to atone, repay, fulfil.
To give something back in thanks.
Reward. Gratitude.
I decide to become a counsellor, support worker.
The ability to work with those afflicted from that which I have expunged.
Help them remove the blight of depression and addiction.
Knowledge. Realisation. Destiny.

I am complete.

coming out of the deep dark hole of void and emptyness is a hard thing to do. I still have one foot stuck in it trying to find something to help me escape. Glad you got out keep writing.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
