I Took My Heavy Coat Off The Other Day

I Took My Heavy Coat Off The Other Day

I took my heavy coat off the other day.
Not momentous I hear you say,
But no,
You’d be wrong.
For me this was a remarkable occasion.
I watched in silence as I shook it dry.
Amazed and stunned I swear I could see every droplet of water fall,
Tumbling in relative slow motion,
Time almost suspended,
Dropping to the floor, the light catching each and every pearl
Twinkling in the light.

The coat, you see, was my alcoholism.
Alcohol dependent for so many years,
But now, a chance.
To answer every question, to find out what is out there.
Clean, removed from the filth of loathsome stagnation and self-pity.
I watch in real time.
There is still water falling;
Still the droplets tumble to the ground.
I raise my hand to my face and catch the tears of joy in my hands.
Yes, I took my heavy coat off the other day.
I am happy for the first time in years.

'I Took My Heavy Coat Off The Other Day' is a brave and -- at the same time -- a very very beautiful poem. Its sheer honesty and triumphant strength make it a singular poem: who hasn't worn some heavy coat at one time or another. Yes, I wore the same kind of strangling coat as you -- but I tore it off like you. Without that coat I feel the sun and the wind -- and yes, also the rain and the storm. But that's Life, We face it. And on rare occasions, a beautiful thing -- like this poem -- arises from our deep pain; a triumph, a victory, a miracle. Congratulations on your new-found liberty and on a sterling poem too!
