Misguided Youth

Misguided Youth

Alcohol is a wonderful and legal drug free for all of us to use.
Such is the myth passed on to the young by their eager, misguided peers.
How can we instil upon them, the potential nascent alcoholic,
Just how much they will curse those friends after thirty years.
The time when you realise that death is imminent upon further consumption.
The time when you try on your own to forego the temptations of this wonder.

This is the time when the shaking begins and co-ordination fails.
The pounding headache begins which has no epicentre but the pain –
Oh the pain expands filling the cranium forcing the sweat to burst forth.
Like a river it courses unabated down your forehead, stinging the eyes.
All sounds are too loud and you curse them craving deafness.
Your heartbeat thunders like a tornado from Hell within your skull.

Ears correspondingly pulse with tinnitis in time to the metronome of the beat.
Cold sweat courses down the length of your back like an obscene torrent.
The spine feels as though barbed wire is being slowly wrapped around it.
Cramps in the stomach stab like cuts made by a knife-wielding maniac;
The very notion of food causing gastric acid to rise and boil.
The body then bends over wracked by torturous fits of gut-wrenching heaving.

Light can be painful, aggravating your now exploding head pains.
Dizziness follows which only compounds the feelings of nausea.
Curling up on the sofa you crave peace of mind and body
But in your heart of hearts you know this is merely forlorn optimism.
A ringing telephone or the visit of a friend is an unwelcome embarrassment.
You either ignore the phone or hide from your friends in shame.

The smallest detail or problem escalates to life-threatening proportions.
Problem solving is now no longer an option but a dream, a wish,
But one which will not be granted and your position in life declines.
You look back to the heady days of your youth all those years ago,
Pounding your fists on the floor wanting to go back, to know.
Yes, alcohol is a wonderful drug, legal and free for all to use.

Awesome writing.
It's very sad what the generations passes down to the younger ones.
I've delt with more than one alcaholic in my life time.
Usually the alcahol wins. It's not only a kiler to the drinker but it rips apart familys.
Awesome write.
blessings,
emy
