Melancholy

Melancholy
I sit in the serene surroundings of a quiet quadrangle.
Wrapped in clouds of contemplation I indulge in introspection.
Flanked on both sides, robust oaks witness my reverie.
A Georgian building of exquisite design and appointment stands before me,
Whilst the gentle ripple of a river laps lazily behind me.

A bird almost irreverently flutters by,
The beating of its wings causing a percussive interruption.
This produces a palpable pause in my muddled musings,
But I forgive her for in flight she is beauty and grace personified.
Returning to my thoughts I fall into a deep melancholy.

I contemplate the Temazepam terrors and Diazepam dreams;
The dark times that have currently reigned over me.
Encased in a sphere of depression I try to penetrate the wall.
Sometimes this simple act appears to be a forbidden future,
A nirvana of peace and tranquillity denied by negativity.

Looking at the trees I feel they stand in silent judgement.
Can they sense my anguish, anxiety – my pain?
Would that my life was as ordered as theirs and as impenetrable.
Impervious to pain their cycle of life progresses through the decades;
No sadness or doubt in their stoic silence, just constant growth.

Perhaps unwittingly the oak teaches me a wise lesson:
Stand tall and strong, stretch out my roots and grow;
Cast off all self-doubt and self-pity and revel in life itself;
Not dwell on the trappings of materialism or aiming too high;
Just live my life, happy with what I have and not aspire for Utopia.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
