THEN LIFT YOUR CARPET OFF THE FLOOR, MY FRIEND

THEN LIFT YOUR CARPET OFF THE FLOOR, MY FRIEND

Then lift your carpet off the floor, my friend,
And lay me down upon the barren wood,
That I might feel the coldness as I would,
That you might learn beginning is of end.

Then lift your curtain — darkness: don’t defend,
And gather up your candles as you should,
That you might know the light of When was good,
That I might know whence came the questions penned.

The words we wished to rest upon the ground
Have shown themselves as whispers in the wind;
Then where-to run the patterns that we said?

Let evening lay upon us silent sound --
And sneak around our fire — setting snare...
That we might bear to learn our rhymes are dead.

I love the imagery of this poem, and the ease with which the words flow is again remarkable.

I always thought that modern poets lacked the ability to write poetry in the various established forms. But here is a fine example of a sonnet; it reminds me of the likes of Elizabeth Browning.

Keep writing
Peace
Ammar

A wonderful poem written with wise intelligence that captivates from the start that finishes strong...these following lines are awesome

The words we wished to rest upon the ground
Have shown themselves as whispers in the wind;

Great lines and a fantastic poem.

My favorite one of yours to date! The candles gathered, grabbed me and I stayed...
