The Desert Night

Cities like snapshots, frozen in time,
Desert sands shifting, exhausting to climb
The gold-rippled mounds, serving as hosts
To some forgotten wanderer’s ghost.
Smoke curls upwards, reaching toward
The pinpricks of light, an unknown hand poured
‘Cross the indigo night
Rising up out of sight.
The cricket’s music, the undisturbed tune
A melody timeless, winds ‘round the dunes.
The drum’s pulsating beat, best known among
Those aware of their beating heart’s song.
The whispering gusts pierce cool desert air
Scented with jasmine, they drift through the bare
Rocky outcroppings and moon-painted sand
Of this obscure and antique land.
