In a crowd something is said
all agree, a nod of heads
sparks within you otherwise
others feasting on the lies
but you have to get a grip
you nod along and bite your lip
and so another compromise
fitting in. It's no surprise
for thoughts are sometimes better kept
away from lips 'til you forget
their numbers mean that they are right
and what you think is only slight
piping up!, they'd laugh you down
embarrassed, nervous, while they frown
and tut and gang up with their words
chanting that you are absurd
so at the end you join applause
standing, smiling, whilst the roar
of others welcomes despot rule
A crowd's a prison for a fool.

Excellent read! I hope others who read your poem will know the historical reference and implications. When I recall scenes of the Leni Riefenstahl film, "Triumph of the Will," your poem about crowd psychology brings this into focus. Five stars!! |
