The eyes have it

* * * *

The lights hang low - the room a smoke-filled haze
and snooker buffs are gathered round the baize.
All bets are laid, but will the crowd endear
to these two unlikely gladiators here?

The one-eyed and the cock-eyed take the stage,
look eye-to-eye and up the pressure gauge.
The first one - simply known as 'One-eyed Hugh.'
The second one is 'Glad-eyes Pete Magoo!'

A nine-frame match - the referee declares.
The first to win five frames - the Plate is theirs.
''If they're the best'' (a punter's heard to claim)
''the losers must be colour-blind or lame!''

The balls are set, the first frame's underway
and disparate eyes are fixed upon the play.
They're stunned! It's mesmerising snooker skill!
In ninety minutes one-eye leads four-nil.

For glad-eyes Pete the county prize looks lost,
the time is now to win a quick riposte.
Four-two, four-three, four-all - they're on their feet!
The final frame - the tension, sweat, and heat!
But glad-eyes Pete is ticking like a bomb
and takes that final frame with great aplomb.

Proud to praise my forebear's name in print,
but overjoyed I haven't got his squint!

Like the old sayings goe, "truth is sometimes stranger than fiction" and "you can't possibly make this stuff up." Your poem transports into a wild, whimsical world. Good read!
