Otter

Contributed by cashfan1 on Monday, 6th June 2011 @ 03:06:04 PM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

In the probing rays of the sun I sit by the river,
Watching. waiting for nothing in particular.
Cool and clear the water dances
To the subtle rythm of silence.
The boom of the wind on the hillside
Is the heartbeat of my imagination.

The Rowan trees sway,
A Chat finch sweetens the air with song
And a Woodpecker announces his arrival.
There in the high branches
A squirel contemplates the leafy halls of his residence
And in the tearful shade of a willow I wait.

The water pauses, the river bank holds it's breath.
And there and again there a flash,
Between earth and rock, of a sleeky black gown.
With an elegance unrivalled the otter parts the water,
Grins and is gone, swallowed by water and secrecy.
The wind booms still, the water dances, the waiting is over.

Very well described with the minimum of description. I can almost see it.

This is breathable Dennis, and in the tearful shade of a willow I wait.......soft and beautifully poetic, inviting to sit with you and see and feel all of what Nature gives us so freely.Otters are a favourite of mine, cheeky and I can imagine them grinning.Just as freely Nature gives so we should always be looking not only to see it appear as with the otter but also be free to disappear again into its own world.

Hi Dennis,

Interesting that you should mention its
smile - because I've often thought when
I've been lucky enough to spot an otter
why are they smiling? And I know the
answer ....... If I could swim like that I
would be smiling all the time.

Enjoyed this one. You know your animals,
Dennis.

I felt like I was right there in the scene when I read this.
Since the otter is one of my favourite animals I almost wish I had been there to see it's gracefulness in such wonderful surroundings.
Words are definitely your canvas and you paint such great pictures with them.

We seem to all agree...you have 'the gift' of nature running through your ink! Great write as always. I want to sit with you in nature and see your poems in life!
