I'm on my way to Atonement City
It's up there before the toll booth angel
Who guards the Microphone's pity
I'm leaving all my things here on the table
Because my clothes and hats are not even normal
I hate the star around my neck now
Why don't they just tattoo a yellow one around my brow
So everyone can throw bricks in my face
Then they can all hound me out of this place
So this time I'm leaving that behind without a trace
There's real joy in running faster
But there's even more in forging the paper
The one I'll need to live my life here
So I don't have to hide and walk the streets in fear
And I'm too old to save this change for later
I've always dreamed of rebuilding the person I was
Better, stronger, taller, wilier, and even polite on the bus
Believe it or not, I can pull this off if I try
But I must be sincere in my aim so high
Or the local priests will leave me to hang out and dry
So wish me luck because I've got a long road ahead
And I don't need people telling me to just pop my head.
