How few the man today, who gazes 'pon the sea
An' marvels at the foamy breaking waves
An' dares for but an hour, to shun modernity
And drink it in only as a mem'ry to be saved
No-He'll take a dozen digital photographs
Like a thousand men the day before
An' consult the image in place of memory
With time, a memory no more.
He'll once stumble 'pon an apple tree
An' pluck an apple so pure an' ripe
An' use his fancy phone to tell 'bout it
An' all who come will moan and gripe,
For when come they to the apple tree
None shall find a sim'lar treat;
They came not upon the fruit by chance
And their apples will ne'er taste as sweet.
How many is the child today
Who speaks of things they've ne'er seen!
Why go outside an' use your eyes
When you've got a plasma screen?
Why work for your enjoyments
In this on demand an' instant age?
I damn an' scorn the lot of them
Who think themselves so great and sage
But ne'er read the words of ancients
To learn from their mistakes
Who won' go without the internet
To a stream or mount or lake
Who in winter sit an' sip in warm cafes
An' complain the whole while 'bout the snow
An' at night won' watch a meteor show'r
For fear they'll miss their fav'rite show
An' yet I also weep for them
Who look down 'pon older leisures
An' see a cabin with no electricity
As a curse an' not a pleasure
Who ne'er ate a supper
By the light o' kerosene
An' saw an unspoil'd sky of a million stars
Soft' light a virgin prairie green,
An' form an endless dome 'bove their bedroll
full fifty mile from another soul......
