She sat close by the sickbed of her son,
And stooped to listen to his faltering breath,
And could discern the sigh profound and moan
Of her dear only son so close to death.
'I'm thirsty mom, give me some water please,
Just a small tumbler or half glass would do'
The fiever and ague to well appease
The son spoke with his lips a brownish blue.
The mother pressed his hand and said: 'Son think
Of Jesus thirsting so upon the tree,"
'Son! - could you perhaps forego the drink
And thus have part of Jesus' agony ?'
The son looked up to her and he could feel
Approaching death' chills and sharp ague,
And slowly uttered 'mom dear, yes I will
Renounce the drink, like Jesus, mom - me too.
