Who is "me"?
Is it him, he?
Or am I just who you want me to be?
Who I'm meant to be,
I doubt you'll ever see
For now, however temporary,
Hello, I'm me.
I've always wanted to just be myself
I never know who, though - life is so confusing
Am I dusty beatnik books, long on the shelf?
Or am I just whatever retro ideas that I'm using
I'll never be the super-ego idealist that you strive for
I'm sorry I cant be a model for you to adore
Standing on the runway
Posing for pictures
I'm perfect for you
You follow me like scripture
Shouldn't you be sorry, too?
This isn't the Utopian playpen we grew into
This isn't the life of which were told
Promised to us when we grew old
Things would be great,
If we did just as told
And before we knew it
Our souls had been sold
