To be a veteran means to be a survivor
Of pain deemed insurmountable
Battling enemies outside and within, the same
Entangled on deserts foreign and familiar, why so inseparable?
A fighter is at constant odds with oneself when
Victory is no respite, rather cause for the next engagement
Exhausted, salty eyes and skin, the squeeze of looming defeat
Thirst immune to hydration, but weak for honor
Encourages feet to move when escape is the only break
Really, to face the sun when home is gone is to know
A choice to never surrender
Never
