She tries the hardest but she never wins.
She runs the race as she tries to pretend
Everything's right and she can see the light,
But without falling from her great height.
How do you defeat the insurmountable?
How are you just "pretty" after beautiful?
Who can win against the unbeatable?
She fights time--fears the unstoppable.
No rantings, no ravings of her beauty reach her ears,
While memories of looks to another spark her fears.
How to compete with Helen's beauty, corseted and bright?
How to make it through fearsome future nights?
Always second best, she knows no other way.
"Your grades will set you free"--Oh! The lies they say.
Smart and hideous was never good enough--
Funny and charming never earned any love.
So please forgive her as she gives up hope.
Maybe gluttony is better than swinging from a rope.
