Rejected by his order, and dismissed
The reason: ' mental instability,'
Saint Joseph Benedict now was relieased
To practise elsewhere his austerity.
Too much of self-denial would not do-
The Order was already very strict,
But what's too much's' too much,- they let him go
To roam the country side a poor evict.
The spirit blowest where it willeth, thus
Saint Benedict henceforth was called 'The Tramp”
A pilgrim by vocation ‘who’d surpass
All othere Lamps as the most shining Lamp,
A wandering beggar tramp and mendicant
He walked the European lands by foot,
And as a begger mendicant was banned
To preach and teach the people to do good.
And so he tramped, a living shining Lamp,
A light so bright for fellow men in gloom,
Phenomenon he, the poor and holy Tramp,
A drifting vagabond without a home.
Rome and Loreto .where the pilgrim's goal,
Devotedly he walked from shrine to shrine,
To nourish and to fortify his soul,
His whithered frame and countenance a-shine.
His alms he shared with louts, but kept one slice
To eat himself upon his threadbare cot,
Or else as alms, a bowl of soured rice,
His soul overflowing with the love of God.
He is the Patron Saint of the impaired
And struck with mental disability,
And those that patiently their stigma shared
With dedicated generosity.
Dubbed by the frivolous and lovelese ' fool'
They suffer patiently and silently,
Exposed to mockery and ridicule,
Deplete of self-conceit and vanity.
He's patron of the poor disturbed in mind,
And the emotionally much depressed,
And those that eat as bread the bitter rind
Of smirch and yet are called the 'blessed*.
A crown of thorns these sufferers all wear,
Upon their head as precious diadem,
And heavy and so great the cross they bear
With tears as nails that shimmer like a gem.
He died in Rome,- a cellar his abode,
The place was filled with luminosity,
His heart overflowing with the love God,
To be with Him through all eternity.
