The Darkness

As the sun sets, the darkness falls
like a blanket, it seems to cover all
what was once so very clear
now leaves me feeling insecure
wondering what is hidden
beneath the darkness as it falls
I switch off my light, it's time to sleep
I pull my bed covers over me
steadily, my heart begins to beat
faster and faster as fear consumes me
the darkness seems to be darker still
animated by my mind's eye
Representing all the dark things in my life
fear, pain, hatred and so much more
all represented by what appears to be
figures created by the darkness I see
long, thin figures with long, thin fingers
I close my eyes hoping they will disappear
but instead, I can feel them as they draw near
Closer and closer they come
until eventually they merge into one
one large figure that I can't see past
Like a predator, it hovers above
whilst I lay silent and helpless
and become the prey of the darkness
Its long fingers reach out to me
as I close my eyes so very tight
The darkness grabs me, hugging me
until I can no longer breathe
forcing me to switch on the light
so the darkness retreats into the night
Until the next time I switch off my light
There's no escaping the darkness at night
there's no escaping the darkness of life
it draws closer as each night falls
surrounding my bed as I try to sleep
The figures, they do not speak to me
they simply over-power me.

excellent poem. You've described how I've been feeling for the longest time perfectly. |
