Dug into the bush surrounding a village
watching in horror the depredation.
Ravaging, torture, marauding and pillage
The Khmer Rouge ways of celebration.
Forbidden to help by Rules of Engagement,
forcing the witmess of carnage and sin.
The sergeant, rage in the eyes of his men, says
'Orders be damned, we're gonna go in.'
The signals, by hand, to form a plan, took no
more than seconds 'til each knew his task.
At the North, two thirties would wait in silence,
while South, East and West their brothers would charge.
The Rouge are equipt with auto-fire rifles
but choose machetes to send their message.
The women, children, babies and elders are
hacked and butchered and left to die slowly.
Twelve against sixty, the soldiers began to
cut down the Rouge and force them to leave.
They run to the North at the thirties in wait,
Get villagers down to avoid the barage.
Fifty Rouge go down to those thirties,
and no more villagers die on that day.
The homicide ends, but the toll is immense.
Even snakes and animals don't live this way.
After the ball, the smoke still lingers amid
anguished wails of those only injured.
Soldiers lay bodies devoid of their limbs
in rows as the villagers match their parts.
After the ball, the silence is deafening,
except for those souls that God forgot.
Soldiers in bushes losing their stomaches, and
staring, in shock, at what just happened.
The fights get simpler with each confrontation.
Adrenaline hides the fear and the gore,
but the mem'ries, all, are with them forever -
the feelings inside..... when each party's over.
