ripples in water commence at a dot
where an entrancing alien breaks right through the slot
the invasion evidence, both far and near
as the rings of its resonance lap in the clear
the light of the new day uncomfortably shimmers
upon the cool surface of the quivering river
a fisherman looks out from the opposite side
his anger unveiled, though he's trying to hide.
The boy on the nearside he's learnings to skim
his attempts are awful, but they're beyond a whim
the fisherman packs up and moves further away
his efforts at fishing are spoilt on this day.
but the boy is stoic, adamant that he'll master
the art of skimming stones with little disaster
a splish, splish and splosh and an almost hooray
are the best of his efforts on this beautiful day.
meanwhile, a huntsman aims his sights on a duck
his aim is perfect but he's surely stuck
for the shooting club captain shouts out that he cheated
and shot it in water, membership depleted
the shooter swears blind that the duck it was flying
but it was the captains decoy, which was proof he was lying.
I'm surprised but amused by the sudden commotion
I take a swig on my favourite potion
The beauty and torment of this summer day
the river flows on as I amble away.
