Fruit of Oedipus

Contributed by Deidra_Carmichael on Wednesday, 6th April 2011 @ 01:45:20 PM in AEST
Topic: mythology

Cascades of ebony crown her
Adding an admirable feature to the lovely woman within
More than mortal are her standards by which she abides
Yet the mortal nature overtook her destiny
This is the life of the Fruit of Oedipus

Daughter's accursed father and mother are to blame
For creating a tragic fate in the land of Thebes
A daughter and grand-daughter all the same
Is what Jocasta bore and it is herself that she hangs
Blood-shed all around are the memories left
Brother to brother they are and the story repeats
For Laiios is dead, Oedipus victorious
yet Polyneices is the next victor in battle
A beloved brother he is to the Fruit of Oedipus

Once he is gone he is deemed a traitor
For Greece can never look at him again with favor
He is left alone without a final resting place
But oh! how his loved ones visit him again to seek his face
All thanks to the bold daughter, the fruit of Oedipus

To provide him protection was all she intended
But the King, her uncle, says it is wrong and the gods are offended
Nevertheless the woman stands tall and courageous
And states the law of the gods is contrary and Creon is outraged
Now that two obstinate creatures have crossed paths
it is time for one to be eliminated and left in the past

Little did she know she was to go first
Despite the fact that her family was cursed
In a vault she was put to die without a farewell kiss
And behold the life, the fate, and the legacy of
Antigone, the Fruit of Oedipus
