5am, a breezy freshness
energized the atmosphere
the wind picked up, played with the leaves
a spectacle to make things clear
a drop of rain, both thick and cold
fell upon a spawning leaf
the silence in between the drops
it's hesitance was only brief.
a sudden downpour fired the windows
gutters tested, flowing sounds
sweet smell released as if on order
belted out from pummelled ground
an awesome echo from the night sky
told all what was on it's way
sudden awakening on pillows
I just groaned then turned away
but footsteps from the other bedroom
hammered out towards my door
my little boy confused, excited,
night care added to my chores
a flash, what light! Startles, no logic
can explain the sudden fear
that hits as clouds explode at distance
shaking all as if they're near
the question's rolled one after other
how far is that one away?
Why does lightning flash so brightly?
Is the flash as bright as day?
Could it kill you if it hit you?
Can it go right through the walls?
are you safe wearing rubber shoes?
Would it blow off both your balls?
Silliness is not far away
when your frightened in the dark
whilst flashing, banging ancient torment
makes reality seem so stark
transformer hit, a power outage
amplifies the sudden flash
crackling thunder crosses the dark sky
to the window we both dash
house alarms go off in stages
as the lack of power hits
the beauty of this new day's dark start
inspires my boy to quietly sit
and stare at all he knows in silence
temporarily exposed
I get up, it's nearly up time
searching in darkness for my clothes.
All at once the rain stops, wind drops
a light is witnessed from the east
the sun creeps in under the dark cloud
beauty following on from beast.
