At sunset's fiery furnace glow
The water birds are gathering in reeds
And at pond's edge like gossiping women
On the doorsteps of my youth.
In the sprawling womb of the wood
The trees are pulsating with the joys
Of rising sap and buds a bursting.
The quickening heartbeat of a mouse
And the dainty steps of the shrew
Are the owl's memory made.
And I see with clearing eyes the far skyline
Reaching out to embrace the smoldering hills,
This is peace, deep mind altering, peace.
So arise my soothing valley savior,
The solitary walker, the secret watcher,
The gossiping water birds at twilight,
The pulsating trees, the mouse, the dainty shrew.
Come let me take solace in the frenzy of your love,
My lonely, lovely Welsh valley kingdom.

Now that's some fierce writing, wonderfully vivid and atmospheric. Penned with skill. |
