She waits the hours in the rain
That teems and stains her overcoat;
Buttoned high as if to hide the fear
She cowers from: nobody will come;
Listening for a pattern of footfall in the hiss,
And quietly grateful to the chill slanting wet
That cools and balms hot cheeks;
Leaving tiny rivulets of disguised excuses
For tears she can later deny.
Then you are there and cup her face,
And wrap her smile round your own;
You bend to take one kiss, no more;
A soft blanket around lingering hopes
To her warm awhile as you turn away,
And footsteps fade back into raindrops,
Leaving her to wait again,
Uncaring of the drench.
