Hunger of the Darkest Caliber

It devoured her freckles.
She did not slip, like so many poetically claim, but was gnawed.
It ate away at her with sharp teeth, and I didn't save her.
It shouldn't surprise me.
I ought to have suspected, given its snarling gut.
I discerned it a mile off, but I offered no appetizer to subdue it.
I thought it would veer.
I felt with an insolent certainty that it would whiff some fine wine elsewhere and scurry away.
I let her palatable fragrance caress its nose like a cocky idiot.
It's no wonder.
She was the finest dish in all the land, how could I dream to hide it?
I just always presumed I'd have more time, more time with her.
But it devoured her freckles.
It swallowed that magnetic sparkle in her eye like fresh grapes.
It slurped up her spirit, and it feasted on her life.
