Railroad disaster was received
Brently Mallard's name
Leading the list of killed
The news of her husbands death
She wept at once
Away to her room alone
Facing the open window, a roomy armchair
She sank,
A physical exhaustion haunted her body
To reach into her soul
In the open square before her
The tops of trees were all aquiver
The delicious breath of rain was in the air
And clouds had met and piled
One above the other
She sat motionless
Except when a sob came up and shook her
There was a dull stare in her eyes
A suspension of intelligent thought
What was it?
She felt it creeping out of the sky
Striving to beat it back with her will
She abandoned herself a little, "free,
Free, free!" The look of terror went from her eyes
She did not stop a monstrous joy that held her
She would weep
When she saw tender hands
Folded in death
Fixed and gray and dead
But beyond that bitter moment
A long procession of years to come
Would belong to her
Absolutely
She spread her arms in welcome
She was drinking a very elixir of life
Free! Body and soul
She breathed that life might be long
And she carried herself
Like a goddess of Victory
