Journey's end around the bend
the sun shines on this memory
the place I came from, I was sent
this was my home my destiny
The cars rush by, no welcome mat
memories of a face or two
but nought but strangers are there sat
the old I left is someone's new
the trees remembered, in full bloom
the houses dressed in new facades
new houses built where there is room
I hold on to dusty postcards
you wrote to me, and I wrote back
fondness from you and nothing more
for we had failed upon the rack
memories? Time passed, but they were sore.
The years rolled on, I made my way
so far away where I knew I
would never see your lovely face
and torture myself wondering why
now I pass these streets of yore
fighting the salt of sentiment
tears show as I pass your door
they're reading out your testament
later today you'll be at rest
and I a stranger at the back
my punishment, time is the test
past acquaintances now lack
the service is all that it can be
for no-one knew you in your prime
the old lady at no. 3
a lot of people gave you time
younger people ask my name
and how I knew you? have to lie
the story told is rather tame
good manners from the tired old guy
They bury you in a fine spot
looked upon by a small copse
I look from distance at the plot
and count the rows of empty slots
the mourners leave and I approach
I look down at the casket case
and here I am holding the torch
the last to stand, I won the race
the cards I held they hurt my soul
no longer comfort, now despised
I throw them in the burial hole
the last attempt to say goodbye
