Street defeat

Dead beat and feeling worthless?
why not grab yourself a purpose?
that's what the professor said
as raindrops rolled from off his head.
Then down his nose, his ruffled clothes,
keep rolling down please do not pause.
For the professor has his duties
each day goes by, so don't feel snooty.

Dead beat, street defeat
useless meat to passing feet.
Hands outstretched no beg your pardon,
years since Joe walked in a garden.
Miming beckon calls for cash
plenty people with a stash!
some will choose to play the game
and throw him coins to fill the drain.

Dead beat, those well turned feet
hand tuppence o'er to feel complete.
Whilst others judge and turn their noses
if they could they would sniff posies.
They know the stranger at their feet
will spend his dough on something neat,
so they will not afford him pleasure.
They have to work whilst he has leisure.

Dead beat, no longer worthless
Professor carries on his purpose.
Shopping trolley is his pram,
his pride and joy for all to scan.
He collects what we don't want.
Don't bug him or he'll have a shunt
and scratch the paintwork on your ride.
You look at him, you laugh and hide

Dead beat, it starts to sleet.
Before long there's an ice sheet.
You get your key, open your door-
for all you know once so did Joe.
You can't wait to get your feet in.
direct debit, central heating.
You spare a thought for those outsiders
are they really easy riders?

dead beat, they sweep the street.
Out poke two ill-tethered feet.
Coldness took a hold upon them,
now the trolley is a problem.
Paupers grave set for another.
Left a sister and a brother.
Who will find themselves a purpose
now professors corpse is worthless?

Dead beat, your life's complete
but your futures not at your feet
Right now you might have a purpose
whims of others make it worthless
then you'd have nowhere to turn
you're core of friends would crash and burn
praise god and hope you never go
down paths trod by the likes of Joe.
