Behold the patron saint of soldiery!
And warriors fighting on the battle field,
His smile is stern, but great his majesty,
Strong is his armor and his dazzling shield!
His bearing is determined, grave and staid,
He rides upon a white celestial steed,
Besides division, squadron or brigade,
In every just and fair war's battle heat.
The scales upon his wings gleam bright like steel,
His mail-shod feet are in strong stirrups pressed,
Dark evil powers dread this warrior's heel,
And sparks escaping from his helmet’s crest.
Unlike the angels in some prayer books,
With swaying curls or long flowing hair,
So different from them St. Michael looks,
Close-cropped and garbed in harnessed iron ware.
Angels there are for planets, star and moon,
And watchful angel guardians abound,
Angels for morning, eve, and afternoon,
That guard their charges and the homey ground.
But of the bright and fair angelic host,
And the celestial choirs and music guild,
I like St. Michael, prince of warriors most,
Who stands by soldiers on the battle field.
Without compare this great Archangel is! -
He fights without a pause for what is right,
And the dark spirit principalities,
In terror of this champion take to flight
And yet his traits a deep compassion show,-
He lifts the fallen fighter from the sod,
And plants a kiss upon the soldier's brow,
Then speeds him on to see the face of God.
St. Michael rides and fights - by day and night,
And never wearies, nor grows ever faint,
To stand as friend besides the soldiers’ side,
As guide, protector and high patron Saint..

Thank you for commenting Nessa!
Yes, St. Michael is the powerful Patron of soldiers, especially if they fight for a great cause!
Always with them!
Have a wonderful Easter Season!

Wow, your poem touched me. It has rythm and grace. I liked how it rymed every other word and each was its own. |
