King Artaban was meant to meet the other three kings en-route,
But was delayed by folks in need, the sick and the destitute.
Physician and astronomer, who had studied many a star,
Looked at the sky and then with care looked up his calendar...
The other Magi Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar
Now sought, like him the Savior king and followed the guiding star..
He carried jewels in his sack, and many a priceless gem,
That weighed a lot upon the treck to the place called Bethlehem
But everywhere the great king went they stopped him with the plea,:
"Please stay and heal my dearest friend who's sick most grieveously".
Physican,- he knew every herb, and plants and seeds to boot,
His intuition was superb to locate a healing root.
He gave away rare medicine among the poor sick crowd,
Then slept a little in an inn and pursued next day his route.
One day the guide star disappeared and he joined a caravan
As they the dreaded Wasteland neared, and sun and stars were gone.
"How will I find the child?" he cried, to offer it jewels so fine,
My treasure is shrinking and gone the star guide, the star with the glorious shine.
And delays, delays, and another yet - his jewels went far too quick,
To all the needy that he met, and the poor, the hapless and sick.
He pressed on but was again delayed his kingly brothers to meet,
When he stopped to save an innocent maid from rape in a sinister street.
He stopped at once to interfere and offered high ransom for her,
Dewhilst the rabble mocked and jeered, he chastised the malfaiteur.
Lo! time passed fast - thirty-three years - he had given his whealth away,
He'd missed the child and was in tears and his beared grew silvery gray
"I missed my king Savior, missed the chilld won't see it, but can only pray,
But run in the wastes so dreary and wild, with forever another delay"
.
But a radiant vision in a dream ; advised him not to be sad
And said all his costly gifts were with Him, and spoke: "friend be comforted"!
Spoke: " Artaban please comfort Thee - you gave unto me while enroute,
You cured me when ill. you were kind to me, and when hungry you brought me food".
"When I was thirsty you gave me to drink and were so caring and kind,
You made my ugly ulcers shrink and steadied my troubled mind".
"Your gems, your pearls, your diadem I hold them fast in my hand,
I value your gifts, love and cherish them - - rejoice! and be glad dearest friend.! "
