Through the Gate

Emotions obscure behind my bitten lip
as nervous fingers button my coat,
and unsteady feet carry me forward,
toward the doorway that frames the glass
through which I see the path and gate,
of where your silhouette awaits.
Heartbeats pound inside my chest
as weakened arms push at the door,
and in this sheepish state of mind,
I find no escape from the blushing smile
that the wind brushes across my cheek,
as my eyes reveal things I don't speak.
Footsteps echo through my head
as shaky legs grow strong with hope,
and my emotions whirl with the world around,
sounds of your breathing next to me
brings warmth and comfort so serene,
to ease me into peaceful dreams.
Expressions twist across my face
as reality courses through my veins,
and I struggle to see through teary eyes,
surprised at the distance felt between,
confused at a notion I'd never think,
that our hearts were beating out of sync.
Eyes focused on the path ahead
as I untangle my heart's unyielding grasp,
and memories linger for remembering,
surrendering to a nostalgic grin,
awake I struggle for the words to write,
in the sun's orange morning light.
Smiles tug at the edge of my lips
as I breathe the city's aire of Spring,
and steady feet carry me forward,
toward the path in front of me
that ventures to and past the gate,
of where another day awaits.
