A Flippant Discussion on Educational Reform
Man 1 had a child and thought how can I raise him?
How can I test him and teach him and trial him and train him?
Man 2 came along and proceeded to bleat
‘Cram his head with the facts and make him repeat’
Man 1 was confused, is that education?
To make them spit out what you have just fed them?
He looked at his boy who was stroking the cat,
‘Get your hands off him boy, you must finish your maths’
‘But father I want to learn all about cats
Why’d they have fur and why’d they chase rats?’
‘Education isn’t like that’, came the scoff from man 2,
‘It’s what we think is best for us all, not just for you’
Man 1 asked man 2 why this had to be so,
Could children not study things for passion they show?
‘Hah!’ of course not, barked man 2 with a sneer,
‘If that was the case I’d be studying beer!’
‘The way you must do it,’ man 2 did proclaim,
Is to put them in groups by their age not their aim,
‘Ignore all their interests and their skills that are best,
Age is the key here, forget all the rest’
‘What do you mean “age is the key?” ’
Man 1 wore a frown now as grim as can be,
‘Who says that this grouping is the best way about?
To put them with others based on when they popped out?’
‘It’s been that way for all of my life,
The same for my Dad, my mother, my wife,
The world is split into 2 groups can’t you see?
The non academic fools and those who’ll succeed!’
Man 2 continued, as his voice picked up pace,
‘Those who don’t study are put in their place
We’ve no need for those people who don’t help or aid,
Economic advancement of things I’m afraid,’
‘The trouble with that is,’ man 1 did infer,
‘Is you’ll lose brilliant people, do you not concur?
For there’s many a man who’s not academic,
Who’s as sharp as a nail and as smart as a whip’
Man 2 took his chance and proceeded to add,
‘I will give unto to you that your way is fab
For people who like maths, science and business,
But it’s at the expense of artistic richness,’
‘Education is modelled to the interest of people
Who prop up our industry and make it all legal,
The enlightenment gave us this great way of thinking,
But centuries have passed and those prop ups are sinking’
Man 2’s face now became troubled and scorned,
‘Tell me your plan then or this meeting adjourned,
How would you teach kids and organise class?
And how would the arts become equal to math?’
Man 1 spoke softly now ‘Isn’t it clear?
We must start with the schools, they’re the frontier,
All manner of them have factory traits that oppress,
Ringing bells, separate sections and the feel of process’
‘As I mentioned before, It does make me rage,
That who children learn with is based on their age,
It’s like their most important attribute by far,
Is their date of manufacture, as if they’re a car,’
‘Kids of the same age may work better in some ways,
If you teach them at varying points in their days,
Some kids work better in large groups than small,
Or others will work on their own best of all,’
‘It’s the 20th century now!’ Man 1 did decree,
‘This production mentality is now history!
We must encourage our children to think and to look,
Not all of our answers lie at the back of the book,’
‘Outside of the classroom group answers are meant,
To be called ‘collaboration’ and are designed to cement,
Colleague’s ideas when it comes to a meeting,
But if you try this at school, you’re apparently cheating?’
‘We learn better as one, not divided and split
Based on our skills not what age we befit,
I don’t know the details but that’s my idea,
If it gathers support I’ll make it more clear,’
Man 2 stood and stared, he had seen the new age,
He had absorbed man 1’s words and was on the same page,
‘We need a revolution, this system won’t work,
We need a new structure, a rebel framework,’
Man 1 and man 2 now beamed at each other,
They chattered away and were no longer bitter,
Man 1’s little boy needed help with some math,
Man 2 gently said ‘Go and play with the cat’

Wow. Good points, but I'm not sure it could work like that.
Nice write, and good job at working out the conversation, I would have such a pain with that.
Also nicely done at pointing out the droll mechanisms of today's schools.
Never really thought of that, though it seems kind of Bureaucratic. |
