18th Birthday

Contributed by cheshire on Wednesday, 10th November 2010 @ 01:03:05 PM in AEST
Topic: drugabuse

Woke early on 12-5, her 18th birthday
Finally signing release papers, call it her great-dreamed-but-cursed-day
Nobody, no money, no map to find the way
Shes leaving it all to find the needle in the hay

Had sex with an old spade to get to the bags
Even ******* his brother, not caring how her head sags
Or how her only set of clothes are turning into dirty rags
Waiting nervously for cash, "When will I get paid?" she nags

Passed it to the dopeman, only had it a minute
Bounced happy to the bridge, ducked beneath pulled out her kit
Spike prick....blood drips....eyes bright when it hits
Warm cars rumble by shes alone outside no fires lit

High was good while it last, but things come to a close
Crawling out of the haze, unfazed, her fingers had froze
Found refuge in a playground for safety she supposed
But cold minutes lasting hours made it impossible to doze

Walking the streets to sift throught the trash
And sidestepping baby diapers to get to the stash
No pride when youre bum, aluminum equals cash
Sometimes a phonecall can keep a scrape from tearing to a gash

Everything in this poem is so true. Throughout the poem there was an undertone that the girl was not proud of herself in the least but still didn't stop. I think a lot of addicts struggle with this.

-very good.
