Value
Value and vision
and a thousand indecisions
made by me and you;
by the time we reach the docks,
we won't know what to do
with the freedoms we stole
simply because
we were attracted by their joy.
We told ourselves
it was duty, our duty
to protect the fragile
kindred spirits.
A single word
can change it all -
an empire's rise,
a nation's fall.
So I'll collect all the words
and toss them together once more,
hurry them away
and out the door
and hope they won't be
ruined by the rain.
I destroy the rythme
with insistence again,
perhaps this time
you will be reminded
that our weakness for beauty
is by far our greatest strength.
By the time we reach the docks,
we won't know what to do
without that diluted courage
to see us through
another night
of poisoned ingenuity.
I have but seven madnesses,
you see,
seven chances to transcend
in our motionless game
of break and bend.
Somewhere among these lines
I crossed one;
I find myself reclining
in enemy territory.
I cannot run
but I certainly can hide.
You've the sun and the earth,
I have the moon and the tides.
In searching for fire,
for harmonies, for words,
we lost all three;
we've remembered what to do
and forgotten how to be.
The ship will leave regardless
of our unpredicted coup,
but by the time we reach the docks,
we won't know what to do.
