It’s a Saturday night when the boys come out to fight
And a parity is born
Between Neanderthal man and the alco-pop fan
This is the brainless norm
Have we come so far, from the cave to the bar
Maybe but I doubt it
Hairy knuckled fists and Stella red mists
To Burberry loincloth outfit.
It’s a Saturday night and the girls are on sight
sitting in the chunder
Kebab on chin, mixing with the sin
Virginities asunder.
Have we really moved along, from chastity to thong
Has it been a million miles?
From the enigmatic grin of da Vinci’s whim
To today’s cocaine smiles.

Matthew,
great social observation. Probably not as acerbic as I would have put it, but then my criticques always have a smidgen of envy in them, anway.
True, sometimes it feels like we haven't progressed that far at all, or that at least in certain acts, we are taking a profound step backwards.

Seems like you are being very philosophical about the direction youth is headed and how innocent youth was- maybe not so long ago? I can't determine yet from reading this piece whether you're ok with things the way they are or not. Seems you might be simply making some observations that border on sarcasm. Not sure. I'll continue reading it. Don't tell me what the poem is REALLY saying though...if you do, I might not enjoy it or look at it in the same way again. Best left to my own interpretations. BOTTOM LINE: a really well-crafted and intelligently writen poem. Wow! You are very very VERY good at expressing your most innermoast thoughts, speculations and observations-very articulate. I'm impressed. Write on, good buddy!!! For all of us to enjoy... |
